Internet Governance Forum – Taking Stock and Looking Ahead The Internet has become a valuable tool in everyday life and a phenomenon encompassing social, cultural, economic and legal facets. During the last few years, a legal framework for the use and governance of the Internet has started to crystallize under the heading of “Internet Governance”. As Internet Governance needs to take into account the respective roles and address and balance the different interests of the many stakeholders involved when establishing a regulatory framework which should serve the public interest of the global community, the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) came into being in 2006, providing a venue where stakeholders from government, the private sector and civil society can discuss issues of public policy related to the Internet. The IGF is a unique opportunity to actually realize the multi-stakeholderism approach and merits to have a continuing life after the expiration of the 5-years trial period. |
